This painting I think could be easily transcribed into a photograph, simply because the pose is fairly simple and could be captured nicely on camera. Colin Frangicetto, who painted this gives his paintings different aspects compared to other painters. He often paints humans, and when he does so he gives them very colorful skin all while telling a love story. I really like the painting and it has inspired me to try and tell a love story through my photography.
I would love to see the images that you created (or will create) that used this painting as inspiration. I also think its wonderful that you are looking to other artists, not just photographers, for inspiration. I often find inspiration from other disciplines. The couple images on my blog (and i will be adding more) were inspired by the movement of abstract expressionist painters.
